It was an excellent presentation. Dr Pusztai's research showed
that it was the Genetically Modified potato, spliced with the gene from
the snowdrop lectin, which caused unusual development of the rats internal
organs. Rats fed on a diet of standard potato mixed with ordinary snowdrop
lectin and those fed on a diet of standard potato only, show no ill effect.
This has tremendous negative implications for GM technology -
mere insertion of foreign DNA into the genome of the food organism seemed
to suppress immune response and upset normal organ development in animals
eating it, and refutes biotech industry arguments for "substantial equivalence"
between GM and parent line organisms which they claim makes labelling of
GM varieties unnecessary. It is clear that much more work is needed before
GM foods can be considered safe. Present evidence points in the opposite
direction, but Dr Pusztai's research was stopped by U.K.government
lickspittles toadying to the U.S. biotech industry. We are confident that
Dr Pusztai will ultimately be recognised as a
Hero of the European
Union.
